Well, let me qualify this by saying it's ok to respect the "art" but if you've ever followed them or been found to burn sage and dance in circles listening to them, then you've lost it.

I love the Grateful Dead!!-or did, more when Jerry was alive. I've never followed them, but seen them about 15-20 times over the course of about 6 years (from discovering them in 89 after moving to California-they are not big in gun-happy Montana) to Jerry's Death in '95. Always a great vibe at their shows (even though I was totally drug-free)-the group is into giving, helping others out, smiling at strangers-not enough people like them in the world sometimes.

The best shows were Vegas, baby. I've seen Steve Miller, Dave Matthews, and Sting OPEN for them there; a couple of them at the peak of their careers. I guess that makes them fans too.

Anyway, they weren't about Guns (who is looking at YOUR profile?) so I wouldn't imagine you'd like them...whose your favorite band? Let me guess-Guns and Roses, right?

I actually happen to like "The Grateful Dead". I was wondering if anybody would notice that Freeze did not even spell the band's name correctly. Being a fan of the Dead makes you a head, not a hippie. Hippies were cetain folks who lived during the 60's, period. And as I recall Mr. Freeze used to watch fences for entertainment...makes you think....

Ha Ha-I imagine you were trolling for reactions since you didn't even spell it right-but I have one more reaction to keep this at the top of the thread-

I have nothing against guns-even own 2 of them (a Glock and a rifle) and I'm a pretty good shot, just ask the guys at the rifle range! I am not obsessed about them to the point that I have joined every tribe with the word "Gun" in it though.

As to the "Hippy" thing, I would bet about 80% of the people that follow them are more the "Yuppie" type. The first shows I went to, I went with huge Grateful Dead Fans, who had attended over 100 shows, and were definitely not "hippies" if by that you mean people who don't shower or shave...... For many years we showed up in a BMW and drank Dom Perignon in the parking lot pre-show, back in the days when I was a financial consultant for Prudential Securities.

There were PLENTY of other expensive foreign cars, even a Bentley, in the parking lot, so don't think I was odd one out in a sea of Volkswagon buses (they were probably the minority of vehicles). From what I've seen and people I've met at the shows, most of the followers went to exclusive Prep Schools and Ivy league Colleges and work in the High Tech and Dot.com industries....so it's probably not a good idea to stereotype people that follow the Dead or enjoy their music as Hippies, whatever you mean by that....

Then again, I like the band Guns and Roses, even used to go see them at the Whiskey in LA before they got "Big" so I don't necessarily think THAT is a bad thing either-I wasn't saying that should invoke some sort of a bad stereotype-I just thought with your "obsession" that would be the Band title you'd "Pick"

What's the common definition of Hippy anyway? Is it all based on the music you like (or don't)?

Ya know there is nothing like hearing a bunch of 4,5&6 year olds sing the song "Ripple" These groovy crazy cat preschoolers are going to perform that song in a few weeks for their parents and those kids so rock. The play is "Stone Soup" and it's all about bringing community together for the greater good.

It's certainly not about dissing folks for their likes one way or the other. Just the kind of thing that progressive children and all peoples need for the future change that is coming.

Am I a hippie, my mother was one, she wasn't smelly or dirty, she was a University Texas professor and designed a forty ft. 3-D mural for the JFK Museum back in the late 60"s. All her students were experimenting and following the path to so called Hippiedom. Since folks who have very little imagination need to put a label on things, I guess you could say she was an upscale hippie. May she rest in a psychedelic peace (96')

Either way I didn't get turned on to the Grateful Dead until recently. I wish I had seen one of their shows, I'll bet it was beautiful.

I happen to like the Grateful Dead-incredible musicians.

I also happen to like about 150 other bands, from classical to the blues to alternative to hip hop to house to new age to jam bands to rock & roll to.....heck, I just like good music well played.

Ummm... Will it get me bagged if I admit being exposed to them in high school and liking them? I don't listen to them any more, I outgrew the phase.

P.S. I don't look like a hippie, but I smoke the good stuff occasionally.
