I have seen this event as Life amplified. It is what you make of it. Whatever you are looking to focus on you can find in some form or another. There are no safety nets except the ones you are willing to help co-create, and even then you may still fall a little. I have watched and appreciated the kindess and the rudeness of others. From out of this chaos of freedom and beauty comes the creation that changes every year that I attend. hi. i have been at black rock city the last three years. and would never miss it. i learned of hyperspace exploration through DMT on the playa which changed my life for ever. and thats not all i learned that has changed my life i also this found love so pure so beautiful like i never knew it before. yes this love is still growing still touching me changing me. burning man has changed my life in so many ways. my whole world as i knew it has exploded before me both good and bad. My life has been so different since my first year at the burn. It seems to me that the playa is a place were visions become real an whats real becomes visions. Peace

I don't doubt for a second you and others have had life changing experiences up on the playa and through the BM community and I will never want to try and take that away from you or anyone else. I had a few myself in my 4 years there. What I find most interesting is whenever someone chooses to be critical or question any part of the event they are challenged by many people to defend themselves, or many people feel the need to defend Burning Man. Honestly that get's very old and very tiresome, and I would argue in some cases just makes some people more disolusioned, but whatever, this is free speech ya?

go click on my photo and access my blogs. i've got what comes out to twenty pages so far of my burning man story. i'm up to the second day of my second year. (2000) oh yeah, this year i learned if you drive a minivan to the playa, sleep in it. it was definately more comfortable than a tent.

Also -- Red -- as a cultural phenomenon, the act of sacrificing an anonymous effigy has a kind of overarching western anthropological significance. The pre-conquistador (and post) inhabitants of Latin America did it, the Dionysian cults did it, and according to one paper i've read there have been similar rituals at the Fiesta and Zozobra gatherings in NM for the last 7 or 8 decades. Advanced civilizations seem to -- more or less spontaneously (or at least for different reasons) -- manifest their own versions of what we as burners go to black rock to do. One of the things, anyway. Granted, it's certainly possible to go overboard. But I'd still be wary about overlooking the visceral immediacy of the experience.

why is that, red? for some people, christmas is the focal point, others become consumed by halloween or birthdays. maybe burning man is not such a special thing to you, but for some of us, it is a time of renewal and a place where we can let the every day aggravations of modern life slip away for a while. you're right about how life being *just* about a certain event or day is a little much, but burning man has definately been the high point of my year for the past seven summers.
