Alright, last year we learned alot.

This summer Freeze and I had the opportunity to take the class: Dirt Roads with NO Signs Navigation 310.

It was excellent! With no problems at all. The best parts were when we hit four way intersections and had to choose the right road to get to our final destination, followed by TWO roads that parallel each other but never cross over. One leads you destination Blue Wing Playa, the other, another 50+ miles of hell and all the way up and over to Limbo.

Our summer classes were GREAT! and since we made so many great new friends it was even better!

  • this was my first year out there what i learned is
do not follow the car in front to close if you loose
sight of the road STOP !!!!
    • Oh, yes!

Right on. From what I remember, you took the Navigation in a Dust Trail course, what number is that? 220 or something. Ya, I think you failed it the first time. (oops) But you totally passed it when you took it again with us on the way to the hotsprings!
  • I decided to forgo that class and take the:
Night Rally Navigation with no signs and maps 350

I drove from Frog at night after most everyone else had left and managed to pass a few people. Some were less cooperative than others making for my passing somewhat hairy. Those roads are deciptively narrow when you're two across at 40+.

Then the next day I took the same 310 class as you and went up and over going back to Empire. A most amazing and senic route.

Although next time I head out there, I thiink I'll do two things differently.

    1) Not carry a doughnut for a spare. Even though it was not needed I didn't have a feel good feeling.

    2) Carry a shovel. If I had managed to get myself stuck digging by hand would have sucked ass, fortunately I didn't have to.
    • All I know, is rock it and you'll get out of anything, so long as you haven't rolled it, AND when you see those foot and a half deep pits of talc on the road, hit them as your slowing and give it the gas and it'll throw like water if your truck is heavy enough! Of coure, those things are wicked as hell and slicker than wet playa!
      • Yep! After the lecture portion of the class I went out for the practical and found that gunning it through those patches worked best. It's like driving on wet playa, speed good, brakes bad. The only problem is you can't steer worth crap!
        • You just have to be Mario fucking Adretti trying to get out of a tail spin is all.

What I mean is yes, you can slow down for them BEFORE you hit them so you don't throw the equivalent to a 100lb sack of baby poweder on your windshield and then yes, gas the whole way, and be FAST with the steering! I mean FAST!

I thought the lecture was boring, didn't you guys? The practicals are so much better!
  • I was a passenger (and rightly so) when we had a night time group lesson in "end of the blue wing/missed the exit road/stomp the breaks and hope you stop". That was just an intro to "yup the gas gauge works - when it's says E it means E".
    • Ooooooh........eeek............E stands for 'empty' not ecstacy!

Last night we did a run out of gas on 101 scenario/drill. That was boring, I mean, 4 lanes of traffic, no signals, no engine running, loss of power steering and get to the right hand shoulder......oooh I don't ever want to take that class again!

I'm getting that damn gass can holder welded onto the back of the truck.
