I walked away with many new lessons under my belt this year, here are my favorites:
- The events that you put into motion months ago will manifest themselves at Burning Man in unforseen ways.
- a walk on the open playa will cure almost any bad mood.
- There is no such thing as pride or vanity when faced with playa boogers.
- Pee Funnels make great gifts.
- 1000 candle power spot lights are fun for playing Spotlight The Playa Pisser (it's amazing how fast someone can run with their pants down)
and finaly - When in doubt, chill out (that's an oldy that bears repeating)

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 2:47 PMI learned that while I enjoy the event and the people that make it what it is, I much rather prefer the playa when it's empty.
I learned that you don't have to work the event to have a fun time.
I also once again watched the event grow and evolve. It will never be the same as it was in previoius years, but with each evolution comes new challenges and new potential oportunities. It's just more of a challenge to see the potential oportunities when everyone is focusing on what isn't the same with regards to previous years. -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 5:23 PMI learned that it is not fun being with a group of people who are on Extasy when you don't indulge in it yourself. I also learned that it is OK to explore the city solo and not worry so much about having "group camp time." -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 10:59 AMThis raises a question ... do you think that the people who *do* do drugs at BM have a fundamentally different experience than those of us that don't? Seems like I heard about a lot of "amazing" stories that started out with ..."and we were on E &/or shrooms and saw..." For me, I was seeing plenty of great things, having fun, connecting with people, etc. but was not in that "heightened state", so to speak. -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 11:01 AMI don't know. I did drugs only one night my first year - had an amazing time. Done more drugs in years since, but I don't think it makes it any more or less amazing - just a different kind of amazing.
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 1:21 PMI deliberately didn't indulge in a lot of the things that were offered to me, because I wanted to be clear, and remember everything and savor it through the winter.
BRC to me is a place where you don't need to hallucinate...I would rather save my money and do drugs when I need the eye opening experience during the winter months! -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 1:27 PMI know others who feel that way too. I find that I remember everything anyway so it isn't much of an issue. And that I don't really indulge most of the rest of the year because there is less eye-candy type things like art cars or hula dancers or whatever.
To each their own.

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, June 1, 2005 - 7:41 PM*Grins* Good point. My first year on the playa, in 2001, I had enough great memories to keep me from dipping into the usual winter funk.

hugs are better than drugs (and subsequently better when you're on drugs)
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 9:43 PMmy take on drugs(and trust me I have taken my share) is this:
Drugs are usually taken to induce some sort of altered reality. Well, Burning Man by nature is an altered reality, so the drugs aren't necessary for that part. I find that they can enhance an experience, but for the most part people take them because they don't know how to reach those states or have their experiences without it.
on a similar level, I used to go to raves and parties and people always seemed amazed and upset when they would come up to me and ask what i was on, only to find out i was sober, but still having the time of my life and looking as if I was on something...

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 9:39 PMI learned that every year is different, not better or worse, just different. Also I learned that people should start putting away the cameras and get out a hammer or paintbrush, (including myself who should be working on big projects). -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 5:32 AMI have learned, that not going for a year, would not kill me. Knowing that while some things would be lost forever, This years particular Temple, The structure the Man stood upon. But that many things would be back again next year, or the year after.
Learning to listen to the world, that, through events in my life was telling me to stay away from BRC this year. I still haven't figured out exactly why it was important for me to stay away, maybe I never will. -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 5:02 PMDid you go this year Greg? -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 9:09 PMI guess that may not have been clear in my post, I made the decision not to go. This was after much waffling back and forth and struggling with logistical issues of getting myself there.
My decision not to go was largely due to difficulties I've been having in my current class at school.

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 9:05 AMI learned that MY playa experiances are my own.
Wash my ass more often
I'm not very affected by playa foot (don't seem to get it)
People are slobs no matter how much they deny it
Don't trade drugs with a narc (actually that was learned by watching a friend)
And a solo experience can be just as rewarding as a group experience.
Parachutes work better on Domes than square structures.
3/4" stakes will bend in 50+ mile and hour winds.
Make sure all of your camp mates have thier structures staked down securely, even if you are not responsible for it's well being
I am not a vegetarian and curry dishes run though me faster than the Boston Marathon
Bring more stamps next time. Oh and barter tools at the BRC Disgruntled Post Office, but an endearing smile will usually get you just as far.
I don't need a camera to remember the good things.
Having a Rug out side your sleeping arrangements is great.
Generators are annoying - though necessary for some - could you please work on keeping them quite as possible though.
Naked Hoola Hooping if fun.

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 5:42 PMAs the years go by, the difference in life in BRC and outside BRC continues to narrow--dwindle, that is.
Learned this especially, last year, though I went out again for 17 days, but Burning Man should be bumped up to 2 weeks, period.
Camp more in the center (again) of the square between streets rather than on the streets, so you get more wind and white out breakage (as I am out early, and leave later).
Large onion bags are great garbage bags, in that things dry out rather than ferment.
Port a pottie art and outside in line goings on is besides the pee funnel posters, a growing thing of the past.
Finally got a touch activated 2 AA battery powered little soft dome shaped light from Lowe's at $9.00--ideal.
All for now....
Thanks for the thread, Jezebel, and inputs, folks. -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Sun, September 19, 2004 - 5:30 PMI learned there was way better things to do the actually going this year after working for the ORG for 10 years I have forgotten what it is to be with my son and not do anything but hang out. -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Mon, September 20, 2004 - 6:06 PMI learned that franks and beans taste great in the desert. So do canned cheese ravioli! Also, making a tall bike that strangers can try out is its own reward. Watching people's faces light up after riding a double decker bike for the first time is amazing. -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 12:54 PMI learned that a seperate "water" bottle for exiting fluids would be most handy...
Also my camping store dehydrated meals were delish. A bit pricey though...
Oh yeah, and a person is A O.K. with only 2 hours of sleep a night for a week and a half. A O.K. indeed.
Oh yeah and another thing... Vicodin+Absinthe+lots of Vodka+not drinking much water + Battling in the Thunderdome = Near death face down on the playa after walking away... only the second time in my life that I've ever fainted.... -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, January 5, 2005 - 5:26 PMThat each and every burn is a completely different experience than the previous one(s). [I've been 4 times]
Don't think that you'll have the opportunity sometime later. Insert own meaning for "opportunity."

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 10:32 PMI learned
- that in 7 years most of my friends are now all burners and most of them are people I've met through Burning Man
- that it is good to radically change your group on the playa every once in a while to cross pollinate with new people
- that regardless of your experience, the challenge of that week in the desert is good to kickstart the soul.
- that volunteering (first time in my life I've ever done it for 3 years now) pays off in ways that a paid gig never could... -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 11:49 PM>- that in 7 years most of my friends are now all burners and most of
>them are people I've met through Burning Man
I'm kinda in the same boat after only 4 years, and since there are very few burners(2-3) where I live and even fewer willing to travel out here to visit, makes for a boring social scene out this way.
>- that it is good to radically change your group on the playa every
>once in a while to cross pollinate with new people
It is interesting how some groups don't like their volunteers to cross-polinate which I can agree with you is a very good thing. -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, February 16, 2005 - 5:21 PMI've learned that even during a 30 hr dust storm you can still boogie oogie oggie till you just can't boogie no more providing you have good goggles(man we got hit last year).
But by far the best...That your true soalmate is out there some where. I met mine at Burning Man in 2002, in 2004(during the burn of the man) he proposed and this year we're having a true playa wedding. -
-
Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Sun, February 20, 2005 - 7:08 AMI also learned the part of the true soul mate (met her last year) and will also be married on the Playa this year.
I learned that no matter how hard things in life are and how down one may be a good walk thru the playa can take your mind to places that will elevate you past yourself.
I learned that an emotional draining time can be the best thing for one no matter how hard it is.

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 10:02 PMI learned that if you are supposed to do something, and someone assures you that they will take care of it for you, you should just do it yourself, or at least check up on the task to make sure it was completed, especially if the person is Pearl.
I learned what it feels like to see your playa crush while doing the walk of shame(which at burning man looks like this: walking towards your camp topless carrying your hoop skirt thrown over your shoulder because it's too hot to put everything back on), then later in the day have them open the potty while you are midstream, cuz you forgot to lock the door.
I learned that you should never tell your hot slutty friends who your playa crush is, unless you want them making out him before the nights over.
I learned that some of the pirates can shake their asses better and are more entertaining to watch than girls in hip hop videos.
I learned that even megaphones are flammable if you poor enough lighter fluid on them and that if you are with the pirates you can get away with anything (as demonstrated by the above mentioned fire and the unwillingness of the rangers in the vicinity to come and handle the situation).
That I don't know what to do if I am not working.
That when I finally decide to do something insane like videotape a sex act at diy porn camp, the camera will not work.
That a picture of your ass can make a great gift (especially if you give it to someones dad after they won't stop talking about your butt) -

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 11:20 PMWhoa.......heavy.
You been rubbing patchoulli on yourself and burning nag champa?
Am I going to have to take your temperature lady? Or just buy a drink for you when you get back here?
I love you Usa! -
-
well actually I've been burning a cocksit!
Thu, February 24, 2005 - 4:04 AMthey are these coils that repel mosquitoes...and since mosquitoes down here seem to think I am below them on the food chain, it must be done, and man I get a kick out of hearing my aunt say "you want me to light a cocksit for ya?"
and as for rubbing stuff on me, well I was putting lotion on the other day and my aunt called for me and my cousin Jenna told her to hang on cuz "she's creaming herself"...hahaha, I just love the way they talk here!
Um, I think I am cool(actually I am quite warm, and it's only 8 am, by noon, you'll be able to fry an egg on me), but I wouldn't turn down a chance to hang with you, as long as you don't come at me with a thermometer.
Can't wait to see you, well actually I can, aside from the poverty and the third worldness of everything here, it's paradise!
and I love you, whatever your name is this week! -
-
Re: well actually I've been burning a cocksit!
Thu, February 24, 2005 - 8:31 PMYou're so silly.
I'll take a trip to see you ANY day babycakes ;)
I promise, no theremometers.

Re: 2004 - What have you learned post burn?
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 5:46 AMI learned that when I lead a group of 150 people into the desert, the natural result is not destruction and annihilation.
WHo would have thought?
I also learned not one of them ever feels like doing dishes. -
